A Review of the Book "Zen and the Art of Poker"
There are various books available today which discussed the game of poker. Some of these books are even similar in focus and appearance. Despite these similarities, some books still stand out above all the rest. For people who are in search for books that offer a somehow different and interesting view on poker, it would be nice to try "Zen and the Art of Poker." This poker book written by Larry W. Phillips successfully combined some of the Buddhist principles with the different exciting elements of poker.
Come to think of it, it is indeed fun to see how two things of different nature can be combined in perfect harmony and congruence. This poker book features several essays which discussed some of the different uses of Buddhist principles to the game of poker. In order for readers to understand what is written, the author made a couple of short introductions to Buddhism and poker.
Phillips did one heck of a job in trying to make a good connection between the two principles. To give the book a more balanced view, the author also provided details on how Buddhism and poker inherently contradict one another. One of these differences is the element of aggression needed in the game of poker and the calmness being practiced by the Buddhists.
Meanwhile, Phillips appears to have experienced some difficulties in relaying some of his points. This is pretty normal especially in dealing with two entities that seem very different to each other. However, these things do not entirely affect the credibility and attractiveness of this poker book. "Zen and the Art of Poker" still gives readers something exciting and relevant to read with regards to the game of poker.
All throughout the different pages of the book, the author have made significant citations that gave him a higher credibility. After reading this book, it can be said that some Zen principles are really significant to the game of poker. This is the main intention of this book. Phillips has indeed done a fine job in connecting the elements of Zen and poker.
Just like all the Buddhists living all over the world, poker players must always be in control about their feelings and emotions whether they win or lose. This skill would help them accept all the events that will happen after playing the game of poker.
For those poker players who would want to try a different approach to their game, trying "Zen and the Art of Poker" is a sure fun way of learning some of the serious aspects of poker. Just imagine how a poker player can gain a major advantage in playing the game by mastering the Buddhist principle of calmness. This would make their personality and their current situation at the poker table unreadable for their opponents.
